What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of
behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or
maintain power and control over an intimate partner.
Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or
psychological actions or threats of actions that influence
another person. This includes any behaviors that
frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt,
humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race,
age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can
happen to couples who are married, living together or
who are dating. Domestic violence affects people of all
socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.
You may be in an emotionally abusive relationship if
your partner:
- Calls you names, insults you or continually
criticizes you.
- Does not trust you and acts jealous or
possessive.
- Tries to isolate you from family or friends.
- Monitors where you go, who you call and who
you spend time with.
- Does not want you to work.
- Controls finances or refuses to share money.
- Punishes you by withholding affection.
- Expects you to ask permission.
- Threatens to hurt you, the children, your family or
your pets.
- Humiliates you in any way.
You may be in a physically abusive relationship if
your partner has ever:
- Damaged property when angry (thrown objects,
punched walls, kicked doors, etc.).
- Pushed, slapped, bitten, kicked or choked you.
- Abandoned you in a dangerous or unfamiliar
place.
- Scared you by driving recklessly.
- Used a weapon to threaten or hurt you.
- Forced you to leave your home.
- Trapped you in your home or kept you from
leaving.
- Prevented you from calling police or seeking
medical attention.
- Hurt your children.
- Used physical force in sexual situations.
You may be in a sexually abusive relationship if your
partner:
- Views women as objects and believes in rigid
gender roles.
- Accuses you of cheating or is often jealous of
your outside relationships.
- Wants you to dress in a sexual way.
- Insults you in sexual ways or calls you sexual
names.
- Has ever forced or manipulated you into to having
sex or performing sexual acts.
- Held you down during sex.
- Demanded sex when you were sick, tired or after
beating you.
- Hurt you with weapons or objects during sex.
- Involved other people in sexual activities with you.
- Ignored your feelings regarding sex.
If you answered 'yes' to these questions you may be in
an abusive relationship; please call the National
Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or
your local domestic violence center to talk with someone
about it.

10 Wearable Spring Fashion Trends - - Color!
By Cynthia Nellis, About.com
Runway:Yellow, pink and blue brightened runways
around the globe. Even animal prints got a bright
update at Cavalli and Lanvin.
Reality: The official "It" color of Spring 2009 is yellow,
and it's available in everything from a greenish-yellow
hue to schoolbus yellow. Although there are plenty of
separates and dresses in this sunny hue, the easiest
way to wear bright yellow is to pick it up in bags, like at
Marc Jacobs, or other accessories.
You're better off choosing a bright that flatters your
coloring (blues and pinks are often easiest) than just
choosing what's hot (like bright yellow).
Don't be tempted to mix the brights with black (too
'80s). Pair with white, denim or other brights for the
freshest look.
Geometry Class
Runway: From abstract geometric prints to sharp
graphic shapes, geometry takes center stage this
spring.
Reality: Geometric prints work for everyone if you scale
the print to your size (smaller women with smaller or
more abstract prints, larger frames can carry off the
really bold prints). Use graphic prints to spice up your
daytime dresses or special occasion looks. Dresses and
jackets with boxy cuts take the geometric trend even
further, but they are harder to pull off.
Sheer Inspiration
Runway: Models walked the runway with show-it-all
sheer outfits.
Reality: The transparent trend can actually quite
modest, when layered over other (solid) pieces like at
Vera Wang. With a nude lining, shown here at Monique
Lhuillier, the effect is ethereal. Illusion-top (sheer
netting) dresses are another alternative and can be
found at great prices.
One rule about wearing sheer: either buy lingerie that
is meant to be seen (pretty camis, nude slips) or keep it
completely out of sight.

Electrolysis Hair Removal 101
By Naomi Torres, About.com
Electrolysis hair removal is the only method approved by
the FDA for permanent hair removal. It does require
multiple sessions to achieve best possible results, but
permanent hair removal isn’t 100% guaranteed for
everyone.
How Does it Work?
An electric current is applied with a very fine needle-
shaped electrode, or metal probe into each hair follicle
for about one minute to destroy the root. Hair grows in
different stages: growing, resting and shedding.
Because all of the hair isn’t on the same stage at any
given time, multiple sessions are needed to get the hair
in the growth phase for electrolysis hair removal to be
most effective- just like laser hair removal.
The Pros
It has the best track record. Electrolysis has the best
overall results, versus any other method, in ridding hair
for long periods of time- or even permanently.
Many different hair and skin types can benefit. Because
it doesn’t target hair pigment (color) like laser, but
attacks the follicle itself. People that aren’t good
candidates for laser can still get electrolysis.
The Cons
It’s a very long, tedious process. You have to treat each
hair follicle individually for about one minute. Covering
just a small area, can take hours.
Bent follicles can make electrolysis hair removal harder.
Previous waxing or tweezing can make hair follicles bent
or misshapen, and getting the needle to the root more
difficult to destroy the follicle.
Multiple treatments are needed. You have to truly be
committed to electrolysis because you will need
anywhere from 15 – 30 sessions, which will take up a
considerable amount of your time.
Skin can get discolored. This is most likely to occur if it's
improperly done.
It’s very expensive. See below, under The Costs heading
Ouch Factor
Everyone has their own tolerance to pain. Electrolysis
has been likened to a stinging and pricking sensation,
and each follicle has to go through it.
Electrolysis Hair Removal Costs
An average 30-minute session is about $60 and will
only treat a small area.

Healthy Heart at Any Age
Age, however, can be deceiving. In Inspiring Stories
you'll find the stories of several women who
experienced heart-related incidents at age 35 and
younger.
With that in mind, make it your goal to know your
cholesterol and triglyceride numbers as well as you
know your 401(K) balance and shoe size. Instead of
counting wrinkles (not that you have any!) keep an eye
on your calorie count - and eat from each of the six food
groups as recommended by the USDA and the American
Heart Association.
Above all, remember: Your body and current state of
health are as unique as you are. That's why it's so
important for women to find realistic heart health goals
with the help of their doctors, and to be aware of the
lifestyle choices that can decrease the risk of heart
disease.
An ounce of prevention? Make that a gallon!
The more thoughtfully you protect your heart, starting
as early as your 20s, the less likely you'll face the
life-threatening challenges posed by cardiovascular
disease. No matter what your age or where you feel
you are in your life, the best time to take action and get
healthy is always right now.
From jogging with your friends, to swapping healthy
recipes, to keeping up with loved ones and learning
your family history, your heart health depends on a
life-long commitment. As always, the first way for you,
as a woman, to Go Red is to take good care of yourself
every day. Because when you do, your life can be as
beautiful as you are yourself!
We hope the information you'll find here will help you
take charge of your health, so you can continue to
renew your passionate commitment to fight back
against heart disease in all forms.

Prevention - Heart Problems
The American Heart Association offers you an overview
of those discoveries in ABCs of Preventing Heart
Disease, Stroke and Heart Attack
Along with the facts and advice you'll find here, this is
just the kind of information you need to get started, as
you begin to understand the risks of cardiovascular
disease in general. You'll also find key facts that can
help you assess your personal risk for heart attack,
stroke and related conditions.
Just as important, you'll also learn how to lead a
heart-healthy lifestyle. From engaging in regular
physical activity to eating healthy and reducing stress,
you'll not only keep your heart happy, you'll put a smile
on your face too!
Does this sound like a major life change? Maybe it's all
in how you look at it:
For physical activity, think walking, jogging, cycling or
dancing with someone you love
For a healthy diet, think whole grains, delicious fresh
fruits and more
For reducing stress, think of taking time for your favorite
hobby or celebrating your "unbirthday" with your best
friend.
For quitting smoking, think about saving the money
you're spending on tobacco for a fun family trip. And
read about more ways to stop smoking
Of course, these are just some of the fun ways you can
add heart-healthy habits to your daily routine. So why
not get started now? A healthy heart is probably the
nicest gift you could give yourself and your loved ones.
How To Apply Makeup
A beautiful makeover is best
viewed as a work of art. Before an
artist begins to apply color, he first
"primes" his canvas with white
paint, which has good coverage,
so that he can mask the
imperfections in the material. On a
white background, he can use any
color he desires to create the
effect he wants.
Similarly, when doing a makeover,
the makeup artist, creates the
same "starting point" using
foundation. Naturally, she cannot
use white but must select a
foundation that perfectly matches
her client's natural skin color. The
ideal foundation must have good
coverage but should not leave the
skin looking pink, orange, ashy or
two-toned. The only color used on
the cheek and eye area, should
come from blush and eyeshadow,
not from the foundation!
The vast majority of women,
regardless of skin color, have
yellow undertones, while most
foundations on the market have a
pink or orange base. Very often,
brands that claim to be
yellow-based are really
orange-based, leaving the skin
with a sallow look.
The second major headache for
makeup artists, is finding one line
of foundation, that has shades for
all skin colors. One such line is
Sacha, which is why this line is so
popular with makeup artists at
international beauty pageants,
where you find every skin color
under the sun. Sacha's
foundations are genuinely
yellow-based, have good coverage
and look terrific even under the
harshest lighting conditions.
After applying the right foundation
for your skin tone and skin type,
you now have the perfect canvas
for makeup. Now you can really
flaunt your creativity, using your
eye, cheek and lip makeup colors
to create the effect you want.

Applying Eyeshadow
While there are rigid rules when
it comes to foundations, it is
with your eye color that you can
allow your creative side to take
flight.
Your eyes are the focal point of
your face. Be sure that your eye
makeup techniques and choice
of colors are most flattering to
your eye shape and color.
With eye color you can create
the illusion of new shapes and
sizes. Always keep in mind that
light colors highlight and dark
colors shrink or recede.
Powder eyeshadows come in
singles or color coordinated
duos, trios or quads. Try to find
eye shadows that are highly
pigmented. Simply put, you
want the shade you see in the
container to be the color you
see on your eyes.
When applying eyeshadow
sweep the lightest shade over
the entire area from lash line to
brow. This shade will be your
base color and is to your eye,
what your foundation is to your
face. It will hold your color and
prevent creasing.
After applying your base color,
apply a medium shade on the
lower lid. This is the part of the
eye that most women apply
eyeshadow. Blend into your
base shade.
A third color can then be added.
Use a deep, dark shade to
create depth. Apply this shade
along the lash line, and at the
outer corner of the eye,
emphasizing the crease of the
eye and brow bone. Blend well.
This is your accent shade and
when used can create a more
defined eye.
How you apply this contour
shade can help eyes look
bigger, smaller, wider set or
closer together. The key is to
blend so well that attention is
still drawn to your eye, not your
eye makeup.
For eye shadow that looks “just
applied” for hours, first, base
your eyelid with a neutral
concealer which closely matches
your natural skin tone. Next,
apply a neutral shade of eye
shadow or a color nearest your
skin color over the concealer.
The process of the powder
adhering to the cream will
create a smudge resistant base
for your eye shadow. It will last
forever.
Really high quality powder
eyeshadows such as Sacha's
color-rich eye shadows can be
used wet or dry. Dampen your
brush or applicator and create
your own liquid eyeliner in any
of Sacha’s vibrant colors. Wet
application of these
eyeshadows serves to intensify
the color.
Cream eyeshadows are the
newest kids on the block. Avoid
formlations that crease upon
application. These cream
eyeshadows can be coordinated
with your powder shadows. A
cream eyeshadow can be used
as an under base with a
matching powder shadow as a
sealant. The best applicators for
any cream eye shadow are your
fingertips.
For extra glamour, use an
iridescent powder to highlight
your eyes. This makes it
possible to trasform your day
makeup into a glamorous night
look.
Choosing your foundation
Foundation is most important
makeup product a woman can
wear. The right
foundation should perfectly
match your complexion without
leaving you with a two-toned
look.
Since most women, regardless
of skin color, have yellow-based
skin, ideally your foundation
should have a yellow base. It
can make the difference
between creating the look of
having naturally, flawless skin or
looking as if you are wearing a
mask.
The foundation market today is
saturated with many types and
brands of foundations. At the
cosmetics counter you are
confronted with an array of
choices - liquid, powder, cream,
oil-free, allergy tested, cake,
stick, stay-on, hypoallergenic,
cream to powder, non-
comedogenic and camouflage
foundations. It is indeed quite a
mind-blowing experience,
especially if you are a first time
buyer.
The following are your basic
options:
LIQUID FOUNDATIONS
Liquid foundations usually offer
sheer coverage and provide a
natural look. Most women prefer
a liquid foundation because it is
easy to apply and, because it is
sheer, looks most natural. They
are available in water-based
and oil-based formulas.
CREAM FOUNDATIONS
Cream foundations are
traditionally the number one
choice of makeup artists. They
are usually available in
compacts or sticks, and provide
good coverage. Foundations of
this consistency provide a
creamy flawless finish and are
easy to apply. However,
because of the higher coverage,
it is more critical to identify a
shade closest to your natural
skin color with a yellow base.
POWDER FOUNDATIONS
In today’s fast paced world, the
modern woman is always in
search of a “quick fix”. To her,
time is precious, yet she needs
to look great in seconds. Many
brands offer their solution to
this in the form of powder
foundations.
HOW DO I USE MY FOUNDATION?
The very first step in selecting
your perfect foundation is
assessing your skin type, to
determine the type of
foundation that would work
best for you.
Selecting the right shade of
foundation for your skin tone is
critical. Most women have
yellow-based skin. To get a
perfect match and to create the
look of having naturally flawless
skin, you need to wear a
foundation with a yellow base.
Apply your foundation with a
cosmetic sponge for more
control and a smoother
application.

10 Things You Can Do
Today To Improve Your
Credit
By LaToya Irby,
About.com
1. Stop using your
credit cards
In a bad credit
situation, one of the
worst things you can
do is continue
accumulating debt by
making credit card
purchases. Put your
credit cards away until
you have more control
of the situation.
2. Get a copy of your
credit report
You can't begin
repairing your credit
until you know exactly
what you need to
work on. Obtain a copy
of your credit report
from each of the three
major credit bureaus
to find out which
accounts need work
and which are just fine.
3. Clean up your credit
report.
If your credit report
contains incorrect
information, you have
the right to have it
removed. Your credit
report will include
information about
disputing inaccurate
information with the
credit bureaus.
4. Get current on
delinquent accounts
Your payment history
makes up 35% of your
credit score. Getting
current on your
delinquent accounts
will have a great
impact on your credit.
5. Don't put in any
more credit applications
As long as your credit
is in repair mode, you
should avoid making
any more applications
for credit. It's likely
that you'll get turned
down for credit and
the applications will
only decrease your
credit score.
6. Keep accounts with
balances open
You might be tempted
to close out credit card
accounts that have
become delinquent,
but wait. Before you
close any account
make sure it won't
negatively affect your
credit.
7. Call your creditors
Right now they're
certainly the last
people you want to
talk to, but you'd be
surprised at the help
you might receive. Talk
to your creditors about
your situation. Many of
them have temporary
hardship programs
that will reduce your
monthly payments
until you can get back
on your feet.
8. Pay off your debts
You will have to start
paying off your debts
to improve your credit
situation. If you don't
have the money on
hand, sell some of
your belongings to
speed up the process.
It will be a sacrifice,
but the financial
freedom you gain will
be worth it.
9. Get professional
help
Resources, like
consumer credit
counseling, are
available to assist you.
If you are
overwhelmed by your
credit situation, seek
professional
assistance. You can
locate a credit
counseling agency
through the National
Foundation for Credit
Counseling.
10. Be patient
Your credit wasn't
damaged overnight, so
don't expect it to
improve in that
amount of time.
Continue paying your
debts and over time
you will see an
improvement in your
credit.
