Your Man

Is She Lying?
When her brain thinks one thing and her mouth says another,
her body gives up the telltale signs of lying. In The Six Keys to
Unlock and Empower Your Mind, mentalist Marc Salem explores
the fault lines between fact and fiction.
Read Her Lips
The physiological stress of lying increases peristalsis, or the
constriction of esophageal muscles involved in swallowing.
Stress also slows saliva production, leaving a sudden dry
mouth. Watch whether she compulsively licks her lips before
speaking, or swallows forcefully.

Listen For Flubs
A moment of distortion in vocal tone can betray a lie. Listen for
long midsentence pauses (as she tries to invent a story), a
staccato burst of words, or a sudden warble, or rise or drop in
pitch, caused by the trouble she'll have breathing normally
when her nerves are in overdrive.

Raise Kids Like a Man
A stay-at-home dad rewrites the rules of fatherhood
came to a halt a few feet from my son's nose. When the door
folded open, an older man in black driving gloves smiled. "Good
and turned and ran.
morning," he said heartily. My son looked at him, looked at me,
and turned and ran.
I don't watch Jon Stewart anymore, because I live with the two
funniest people I know: my 5-year-old son and 3-year-old
daughter. Sadly, my wife misses most of it. She works. I stay
home with the kids.
I never thought I'd be a stay-at-home dad. My plan was similar
to yours, I'll bet: Have as much fun as possible as I worked my
way up the corporate ladder, then commit to a great woman
when the time was right. We'd have kids, and she'd stay home
to raise them. Not because I believed that's women's work--I'm
no caveman. I just figured she'd want to. But when my wife got
pregnant, I did the manly thing by volunteering to do the
womanly thing. It just made sense. She loved her job; I hated
mine. And she earned a lot more than I did.
Childbearing may be excruciating, but it's a sprint. Child rearing
is more like a marathon--a slow, dull pain that can sap your
energy and accelerate your aging. I knew I'd have to pace
myself. So I made it my goal to find ways to suppress the pain.
That led to the following rules. Institute them at your house,
whether or not you stay home with the kids, and you'll ease
your stride for the long haul.

Bad Marriage May Be Bad for Both Men and Women
Both Spouses May Face Higher Risk of Health Problems if
Unhappy at Home
Being in a bad marriage may be equally hazardous to the
health of both spouses, according to a new study.
Researchers found men and women in unhappy marriages
suffered from increased stress levels throughout the day at
home and at work as well as higher blood pressure at midday
at the office, which could raise the risk of heart attack or stroke.
"What is happening is that marital problems are spilling into
the workplace," says researcher Rosalind Barnett, a senior
scientist at the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis
University in Waltham, Mass., in a news release. "And if these
tensions persist over time, there could be serious health
problems."
Researchers say the findings also debunk the notion that being
in a bad marriage affects the wife more than the husband.
"It's generally assumed that primary relationships are more
critical to a women's psychological well-being than men's, but
this is not the case," says Barnett. "When there is marital
concern, men and women are equally affected."
Bad Marriage = Higher Blood Pressure
In the study, researchers measured stress indicators, such as
saliva cortisol levels (a stress hormone), blood pressure, and
self-reported stress in a group of 105 middle-aged civil service
workers in the London area.
The results showed that men and women who reported a
higher level of marital concerns had higher cortisol levels in the
morning after waking up and higher self-reported stress and
blood pressure throughout the day than those who were
generally happy with their marriage. These negative effects of
a bad marriage were the same in men and women.
Researchers say stress has been linked to a higher risk of
heart disease, stroke, cancer, and many other health problems.
They say the results add to evidence that psychological factors,
such as marital strains, influence biological functions in
everyday life and can have a negative impact on men and
women's mental as well as physical health.

Healthy Eating
for Weight Loss
Most health experts
recommend eating a
balanced, healthy diet
to maintain or to lose
weight. But exactly
what is a healthy diet?
The basic components
of a healthy diet include
the right amount of:
Protein (found in fish,
meat, poultry, dairy
products, eggs and
beans)
Fat (found in animal and
dairy products, nuts,
and oils)
Carbohydrates (found in
fruits, vegetables,
pasta, rice, grains,
beans and other
legumes, and sweets)
Vitamins (such as
vitamins A, B, C, D, E,
and K)
Minerals (such as
calcium, potassium, and
iron)
Water
What Are Calories?
Of these six nutrients,
only carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats
provide calories. A
calorie is a
measurement, just like
a teaspoon or an inch.
Calories are the amount
of energy released
when your body breaks
down food. The more
calories a food has, the
more energy it can
provide to your body.
When you eat more
calories than you need,
your body stores the
extra calories as fat.
Even low-carb and
fat-free foods can have
a lot of calories that can
be stored as fat.
What Are Proteins?
Proteins are nutrients
that are essential to the
building, maintenance,
and repair of body
tissue such as the skin,
the internal organs and
muscle. They are also
the major components
of our immune system
and hormones.

Vasectomy
A vasectomy is
considered a
permanent method of
birth control. A
vasectomy prevents
the release of sperm
when a man
ejaculates.
During a vasectomy,
the vas deferens from
each testicle is
clamped, cut, or
otherwise sealed. This
prevents sperm from
mixing with the semen
that is ejaculated from
the penis. An egg
cannot be fertilized
when there are no
sperm in the semen.
The testicles continue
to produce sperm, but
the sperm are
reabsorbed by the
body. (This also
happens to sperm that
are not ejaculated
after a while,
regardless of whether
you have had a
vasectomy.) Because
the tubes are blocked
before the seminal
vesicles and prostate,
you still ejaculate
about the same
amount of fluid.

Your Demons
Some people might call
you highly competitive.
Some might call you
superfit. But a growing
number of doctors
would label you
something else:
Depressed
In 1994, at the age of
33, Raymond Britt took
up running. It made
him feel good. In fact,
the more he pushed
himself, the better he
felt. So each time he
went out, he pushed a
little harder. It seemed
to put him above the
turmoil of the world
and afford him some
relief. Relief from what
-- that wasn't so clear.
His life was good. He
was a successful
executive. He'd
married his high-school
sweetheart. He had
beautiful children.
But there was
something odd about
it all. For one thing, he
had no background as
a runner. He'd been a
powerlifter in his 20s,
benching 315. But in
the summer of '94,
amid a hectic schedule,
he happened to see a
flier for the Chicago
Marathon and was
seized by the impulse
to run it. Never mind
that there were only a
few weeks left to train.
Never mind that he
had never run more
than 3 miles at a time.
He thought, I can do
anything for 5 hours
and 30 minutes, which
was the qualifying time
to receive a finisher's
medal.

Gout - Topic Overview
What is gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis marked by sudden attacks of painful,
inflamed joints. It is characterized by pain, swelling, redness,
and warmth ( inflammation) as well as stiffness in a joint or
joints. Without treatment, gout attacks tend to recur and may
cause severe damage to joints, tendons, and other tissues.
Gout is most common in men. 1
What causes gout?
Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood
(hyperuricemia). Hyperuricemia usually does no harm, and most
people with high levels of uric acid in the blood never develop
gout. When uric acid levels in the blood are too high, uric acid
may form crystals that accumulate in the joints. The exact
cause of hyperuricemia sometimes goes undiscovered,
although inherited factors ( genes) seem to play a role. Gout
can seem to flare up without specific cause or can be brought
on by factors such as being overweight, eating meats and
seafood that are high in chemicals called purines, taking certain
medications (especially aspirin and diuretics), and drinking too
much alcohol.
What are the symptoms?
Gout usually develops after a number of years of buildup of uric
acid crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues. The most
common symptom of gout is a nighttime attack that produces
swelling, tenderness, redness, and sharp pain affecting a big
toe (this symptom is called podagra). People who have gout
may have a few very painful attacks in one or two joints,
usually the big toe, foot, ankle, or knee joints. The attack can
last a few days or as long as several weeks, and then the
symptoms disappear completely. Another attack may not occur
for months or years. More....
Inguinal Hernia -
Surgery
Surgery has generally
been recommended for
all inguinal hernias to
avoid complications
such as strangulation,
in which a loop of
intestine becomes
tightly trapped in a
hernia, cutting off the
blood supply to that
part of the intestine.
However, surgery may
not be needed if the
hernia is small and you
do not have
symptoms. Consult
with your doctor to
decide if you need
hernia repair surgery.
If a hernia in an adult
can be pushed back
(reduced), surgery can
be done at the
person's convenience.
If it cannot be pushed
back, surgery must be
done sooner.
